3-4 June 2011 Como-Lugano
Sunday. Going to Lake Como. Totally quiet on a Sunday morning at the train station. Everybody should be at the church I guess. This is not the Milano Grand Station, but another smaller train terminal in Milan that serves regional trains to Como and beyond. Once we reach Como station, we got down and walked to the hostel: Villa Olmo. This is a rather nice hostel by the lake side, very beautiful. In case you don’t know, this lake is where they filmed Star War. The lake has airplanes land it and has a plane hangar at the shore. We took a walk and saw some pasar malam like market selling t shirts and handcrafts.
Went to a supermarket to get our supply. Bailey’s Irish Cream was only 7 euro! Can you believe it? I almost wanted to grab a bottle with the ice cream but then Z said how are we going to finish the whole bottle? Idea shot down =(
There is a communal area in the hostel which includes a mini library. Z and I played Stacko the night. One kind soul even offer us his cherries. The cherries tasted so sweet.
After that I went on to see what books they have. Bridget Jone’s Diary. Aha! Let’s start reading.
The next day we went up Brunate by Funicular and spent the whole day there. Charming little settlement on top of the hill, overlooking the whole of Lake Como. Simply fabulous.
On the third day, we took the bus from Como to Menaggio and then transfer to another bus (C12) to Lugano, Italian speaking part of Switzerland.
We passed through immigration checkpoint but the soldiers didn’t stop us. The MacDonald’s meal in Lugano is rather expensive, SF10.80 per meal. Really expensive.
Took the funicular up to Monte San Salvatore. From the top of the hill you can see the umbilical cord linking Lugano from Italy.
The scenery as seen from the top is so surreal.
We took the same bus back to Como. It took about 2 hours.
We walked to the city centre of Milan for dinner. Went to a Chinese take away shop and ordered some fried rice. My first Chinese meal in many days. We asked the boss if we can have our fried rice in his shop since there are no tables and chairs. He told us we could eat by the little counter standing. So we did. There are some Italians who cycled down and ordered take away as well, we presume they are the university students who either trying to stinge or have a change in taste.
In the evening, we discussed with another fellow backpacker who will be driving back to Milan and see if we can hitch a ride from him, he agreed and we shall be on his car tomorrow.
